Churchill School News: Week of January 27-31, 2020

Hello Churchill Families,

Anyone who knows me knows I love a good quote - a funny quote, a deep thoughtful quote, or even a sarcastic-maybe-not-the-nicest-but-let's-be-honest-it's-the-truth kind of quote. And rather than start the weekly school messages with an awkward weather comment before launching into the reminders and updates, I thought maybe I would start sharing some of my favourite quotes about teaching, about kids, about parenting. The funny ones. The deep thoughtful ones. Probably not the sarcastic but truthful ones. Because if there's anything that we all have in common it's that we laugh and cry about the kids, and love them despite it all.

"Behind every child who believes in him or herself is a parent who believed first."

~ Matthew Jacobson

Churchill School Council Blog

If you haven't had a chance to check out the CASC blog, then you are missing out! There is a rich variety of information on the site, and it is filled with parent, student and staff voice on all the wonderful things happening at Churchill.

However, we have had to move the site to a Google platform, and the new url is: https://sites.google.com/ocdsb.ca/churchillalt. Please update your bookmarks accordingly.

School Cash Online

Recently a paper letter went home informing parents that have now moved to School Cash Online as our preferred method of payment for all school fees, field trips, etc.

School Cash Online helps parents and community members pay school-related fees safely, quickly and easily. By using School Cash Online, you help increase efficiency and security at schools by making payments directly into your school's bank account. This allows teachers and office staff to focus on helping students, and not counting cash. Plus, you get to stay informed of your child's activities and needs!

Powered by KEV Group, the new system puts all of the school fees available to your student online for purchase. Schools post their items and activities through the system and assign the relevant fees to your child/student. You can then choose to purchase these fees online through three different methods, including credit cards. You can also stay informed and keep track of which school fees require your attention.

You are now able to register - a simple task that takes less than five minutes - by visiting https://ocdsb.schoolcashonline.com. Visit www.ocdsb.ca if you'd like more information and to view Frequently Asked Questions. Should you encounter any difficulties, you can use the Parent Help Desk at 1-866-961-1803 or email: parenthelp@schoolcashonline.com.

Lost and Found - a message from Tami Grosset

It’s LOST & FOUND WEEK!

I help with the Lost and Found. At the end of each month I lay out all the L&F items on the lobby floor and the teachers have their class’ walk past so the kids can take anything they recognize as their own. At the end of the day I go through what is left. Things that are labelled clearly go back in the L&F box and attempts are made to reunite the item with its owner. Anything that is not labelled is donated to our sister school, which is home for a large number of families from under-privileged backgrounds. They can always find homes for the things we send them.

Whilst it’s good to know we’re helping the community at our sister school, I’m sure you would all rather keep your child’s items.

This week I will be sorting out the Lost and Found bin on FRIDAY, JANUARY 31st.

Please check the L&F bin this week, before the close of school on FRIDAY. Even if you don’t think your child has lost anything, they probably have!

Lastly, if you haven’t got good labels for your child’s gear yet then please consider Mabel’s Labels, and select Churchill Alt for the fundraiser. You get amazing labels and CASC gets money back; and you get your kids’ gear back!!

A huge thank you to Tami for donating her time to keeping the L&F under control.

Parent Resource Library

New addition: Transforming the Difficult Child: The Nurtured Heart Approach by Howard Glasser and Jennifer Easley

The books in the Resource Library (found in the lobby) are free on loan for any parent/guardian. Please sign out with the card located on the inside front or back covers, and hand them in to Anna in the office. They can can returned to the office as well. While no sign out time has been designated, please know that many of the resources are popular, and other parents are waiting to read them. We ask that you return them as promptly as possible.

The information in the books and resources are there for parents to do with as they see fit, and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the school or the board, or its staff.

Take good care,

Erin
