Hello Churchill Families!

Happy New Year to everyone. On behalf of the staff, I want to express that it is great to see everyone back and refreshed for a new year! I hope you all had time to relax and enjoy time with family and friends.

As it is the new year, and we also have a few new families starting with us, I thought it would be a good time to review some important routines at Churchill:

1) This time of year sees an increase in illnesses in children and adults. Ottawa Public Health recommends that children not attend school when they are ill to avoid the transmission of germs, and that children be free from vomiting and/or diarrhea for 24 hours before returning to school. Other tips to minimize illness are:

- avoid touching mucous membranes on the face (eyes, nose, mouth) as much as possible
- cover your hands (with a sleeve) when contacting "high touch" areas such as handrails, door handles, light switches
- cover your mouth with your elbow when coughing or sneezing
- wash hands regularly, especially after using the washroom, and before eating, with soap and water, or at least with hand sanitizer

While illnesses are unavoidable, we appreciate your support in helping to keep our students and staff as healthy as possible.

2) Another gentle reminder that Ravenhill Avenue between Churchill and Edison is closed to vehicles between 7:45-8:15am, and again from 2:15-2:45pm as it becomes a school bus loading zone. We also would appreciate it if you could avoid parking in that section of Ravenhill if it means you would be driving through the area during the restricted times. Thank you for your cooperation.

3) Our school start time is 8:00am. It is important that students arrive on time for school so that they are able to start the day with their peers, and engage with the learning at the outset of the day. While we understand that from time to time, events happen to make us late, consistent attendance is crucial to student success. If you are experiencing difficulties that are impacting your child's ability to get to school on time, or to attend regularly, please reach out to us. We are here to support and help.

Dates to remember:

Tuesday, January 16, 2018: OCDSB Kindergarten Information session, 4:30. This session is a general overview of the kindergarten program being offered by the OCDSB. Prospective parents, whose child will be turning 4 by December 31, 2018, are welcome to attend. A more site-specific session pertaining to Churchill will occur later in the spring.

Tuesday, January 16, 2018: CASC meeting, 7:00pm. Our first School Council meeting of the year!

Friday, January 26, 2018: PA Day, no school for students.

Winter is upon us! This year, Snowhawks Ski and Snowboard School is offering Churchill Alternative students in grades 4 to 6 a four-day, after-school ski and snowboard program. The first outing is Thursday, February 8, 2018, and the program then continues Feb 15, Feb 22 & Mar 1. Two trips each to Vorlage and Mt Cascades will provide plenty of variety. Participants are welcome to register for lift tickets and motor coach travel only, or may add on lessons and/or equipment rental as desired. Coaches will leave the school at dismissal, and return to school at 9:00 PM. Deadline for registration is January 22, although space may fill before the deadline. Info-sheets are being handed out to students in the classrooms, and a PDF version is attached. Registration is now open online at For answers to any questions about the program, please contact Snowhawks directly at, or 613-730-0701.
***Please note that this event is not being sponsored, run or supervised by the school or the school council.***

As always, we are here should you have any questions, concerns, or feedback.

Take good care,
